Buying digital downloads: a practical checklist

Check file formats, software requirements, licences and printing before buying a digital template or printable.

By HoldMyTwist · · Editorial policy

Before buying a digital download, check how you will use the files. A preview can show a finished project while leaving out the software, printing or editing needed to make it yours.

Name the result you want

A weekly planner you can print at home and fill out by hand has different requirements from an editable planner you want to include in a product for sale. Write down your intended use before browsing, especially if you need permission for commercial work.

Check what is included

Look for the file formats, page sizes and number of pages or assets in the listing. Check whether the files are editable. A photo of a framed print does not mean you will receive a frame or a physical print.

For a printable, check the page size and whether it requires borderless printing. For a template, check the application and version it requires. A workflow download should identify its integrations, required accounts and setup instructions.

Ask the seller about missing details before buying. The appearance of a preview does not establish compatibility.

Read the licence for your use

Read the supplied licence for permission to use the resource in your project. Personal use, client work, commercial use and resale can carry different restrictions. Pay particular attention to redistribution and use in products you sell.

This guide does not interpret a particular licence. If its wording leaves your intended use unclear, ask the seller or seek appropriate professional advice before relying on it.

Account for the setup

You may need software, fonts, paper or printing as well as the download. Check the instructions and the support described in the listing, and allow time to customize the files.

Consider how much editing you want to do. A blank framework gives you room to build your own version; a completed example may be easier to start with if you are unfamiliar with the tools.

Keep a buying checklist

These checks help you assess a listing; they do not guarantee product quality. For HoldMyTwist products, the current Etsy listing is the source for included files, availability and purchase terms.
